The hostel piano rocks!

So, this Wednesday night I am working my shift at the front desk and this lass from Paris is ripping out tunes on the badly out of tune piano in the lobby. She was playing the Joplin tune The Entertainer and I told her that she sounded it like she was playing piano in what I imagined sounded like an old time bordello. I had to explain what a bordello was and the significance of an out of tune piano in a house of ill repute. I asked her if she wanted to record and she agreed. Being on the front desk and not in the studio, posed a monumental pickle. How am I going to record this cool music in the lobby while I am working? Well, I got Mike to cover for me and I run over with armfuls of stuff, drag it in, find power, get it across the room, set it up and Pamela is gone!

I track her down, I think she didn’t believe me when I said I waned to record her. She was quite shy about it and maybe a little reluctant to start. She said that she has not recorded before. I have found that when people have not recorded before or much, they get very self conscious in front of the mic. She did, but over came it very quickly. Being on the desk and having to work I was not able to hang out and hover over her while she recorded. So, she recorded her best stuff while I was away.

I must say that she did a great job on a very out of tune instrument. Proving that it is the person behind the instrument not the instrument itself.

Pamela left today and there were tears all around, we will miss you Pamela and thank you for your beaming soul and the love and music you passed our way.

This is part one becasue, she stopped playing and Adam started giving her voice lessons which evolved into the next part. So that is why there are the pictures of the both of them and hence the name Piano Night.

Lonely Planet Review

There may be no better kitchen in a hostel here in the States. It’s huge, allowing many people to be working all at once. Pots, pans, knives and dishes beg one to pull them down and test out their cullinary skills. Worse, the hostel stocks four (or more) refridgerators full of food that is free to use. Anyone who likes to cook will immediately find my rating be just.

During the summer, Santa Fe is notorious for very pricey hotel accommodations. During the winter/spring these prices drop, and it is possible to find budget hotel accommodations for about $50 a night. However, being a hostel enthusiast on a tight budget, I decided to check out what Santa Fe’s hostel scene had to offer….

Arrival at the Santa Fe International Youth Hostel! The people who run this place are really friendly. They have a large public kitchen where they typically make meals all together and socialize. This is a great hostel!
