If Arriving By RailRunner

Unless you are traveling by car, taking the RailRunner is by far the preferable method to arrive at the Santa Fe Hostel from points south.  The train is inexpensive, leaves from downtown Albuquerque (near the Route 66 hostel), and drops off within an easy walk of the Santa Fe International Hostel.

As of September 13, 2009, the train now has weekend service (view schedule.)  Be certain to check out the RailRunner schedule before making transfer plans utilizing the RailRunner.

Directions:

Take the RailRunner from Albuquerque to the “South Capitol” station at 1301 Alta Vista.

From the station, walk south (toward Albuquerque) 1/2 block to Alta Vista and turn right. Walk along Alta Vista to Cerrillos Road (this is the first major intersection.)

Walk south (left) on Cerrillos Road for approximately two blocks. The hostel will be on your left.

If Arriving By Bus: Greyhound (Albuquerque Only), El Paso Limousine, etc.

Greyhound:

As of 2009, Greyhound no longer has service to Santa Fe. But don’t worry! If you’re traveling the states by Greyhound it is still very easy to get to the hostel either via Albuquerque (south of Santa Fe) or Denver (north of Santa Fe.)

– Greyhound to Albuquerque (south of Santa Fe)

You will want to get off at the Greyhound station in Albuquerque, NM and walk next door to the RailRunner, New Mexico’s commuter rail between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. For direction via RailRunner, please visit the prior section on this page.

– Greyhound to Denver (north of Santa Fe)

If you will come to Santa Fe via Denver or other points north, you can get to Santa Fe direct from Denver via “Mexican” bus lines. See below

Mexican Bus Lines:

There are buses that run between El Paso, TX and Denver, CO and as far as Los Angeles, CA. These are the same quality as or better than Greyhound and are express schedules.

Bus Dropoff/Pickup Address:

Giant Convenient Store
2691 Sawmill Rd.
Santa Fe, NM 87505

Some of the “Mexican” buses stop at the Conoco gas station across the street from the Giant station. And some of the buses scheduled for one accidentally stop across the street at the other but the walking directions to the hostel are the same for each.

To get to the hostel from the Giant (or Conoco) gas station:

  1. Taxi – you can call Capital City Cab at (505)438-0000 and have them take you to 1412 Cerrillos Road.  The cost will likely be between $20 and $30.  The drive should take 5-10 minutes.
  2. City BusAvailable during the day only. Walk to the #6 bus (heading north/west) to the Downtown City Bus Transfer station.  Make sure to ask the driver for a “transfer,” as you will be transferring buses.  From the Transfer station, take the #2 down Cerrillos Road to the hostel.  You will be let out directly across the street from the hostel.  At the time of this writing, this trip costs $1.00 and takes approxomately 2 hours.
  3. Walk – For a good walker with luggage, the walk can be done in approxomately 1 hour if you talk the bike path along the railroad tracks (quiet, pretty) or 1.5 hours if you walk along the road (better lighting.)  Bike/Walking Path: From the Giant station on Sawmill Road, walk north on St. Francis to Zia Road (NOTE: there is no sidewalk here.)  At Zia Road, move a little bit to the west to find the path that follows the railroad tracks.  Continue straight ahead between the buildings to a paved bike/walkway paralleling the tracks which will take you to Alta Vista, which is also the RailRunner South Capitol Station.  Walking directions from there to the hostel are above.  Walk Along the Road: Take St. Francis to Alta Vista.  Make a left on Alta Vista and go a short distance to Cerrillos Road.  Turn left on Cerrillos Road and walk down to the hostel at #1412.

If Arriving By Amtrak (Train)

The closest Amtrak station to Santa Fe is in the town of Lamy. To get from Lamy to Santa Fe, you’ll want to take the Lamy Shuttle. The fee for the shuttle from the station to Santa Fe is often included in the price of your Amtrak ticket. You’ll want to verify that.

The Lamy Shuttle generally requires reservations. The Lamy Shuttle’s contact information is here.

If Arriving By Airplane

From the Albuquerque International Sunport (aka Albuquerque Airport (ABQ))

The RailRunner commuter train has created a new way to get from the ABQ airport to the Santa Fe International Hostel. From baggage claim, walk left to the end of the ground transportation arrivals area and board the RIDE Route 350 express handicap accessible van or #50 route bus. Take this to the RailRunner station and then follow the instructions at the top of this page for taking RailRunner to the Santa Fe International Hostel. Be certain to check the RailRunner weekday schedule and the RailRunner weekend schedule as the train runs 7 days/week but runs a limited service on weekends and holidays.

Failing a RailRunner connection, the best option for traveling between ABQ and the Santa Fe International Hostel is a shuttle bus, such as the Sandia Shuttle, from the ABQ airport directly to the hostel. If planning to arrive after 11pm, please keep our office hours in mind. and contact us if you have any questions.

You can also rent a car and drive. See “If Arriving By Car.”

From the Santa Fe Airport (SAF)

The best way to get to the hostel from the Santa Fe airport is by taxi. (The city transit system ends two miles short of the airport.)
